best three camp experiences

On camp my best three experiences was kayaking with the dolphins while the were jumping out of the water and one of the dolphins going under my kayak. Going on the byrman trail in the dark while blindfolded and while you had to keep hold of a rope while the parents tried to scare you by saying BOO! and making noises
and touching your shoulders lots of people screamed but I didn't scream because it wasn't scary. my last and final thing was drum role please....... Playing spotlight in the dark while lying on my tummy in the  while one of the parents

Shark!!

"Shark" was the only thing I was thinking about when I saw the six fins in the water. I was in a kayak at Mistletoe Bay at that very time.My heart was racing as fast as a v8 super car, then I heard someone at the wharf yelling out "dolphin", that put my heart rate back to normal. there were 5 other people in the kayaks wit me. When the dolphins came into the Bay everyone was getting in the water to swim with them. Shimya and I stuck together because she was freaking out. They went under me when I was in the kayak  I could see there shadow swimming swiftly below me.I could see there tails going hard out under the water. At the start thy were jumping up and down showing off to everyone.Andy was on the jet ski trying to keep them in the bay so we could keep swimming with them. People were getting towed on the biscuits by Sheryl she was swimming along holding the biscuit rope. What a great experience to happen to me on my first time kayaking!

mistletoe bay

the biscuit oh no hope it ain,t scary or anything cause I don't wont to drown today. oh no the coldness of the water was so cold. burrrrr so freezing. oh no here we go ah going so fast on the jet ski at mistletoe bay. oh dam slipping slipping ah I fell off dam everyone was laughing at me I thought it was kind of funny. and  the water tasted really gross and all salty and then the water went right up my nose and it was like eww.

year six camp

on the 4 day of camp we were swimming in the water and we saw dolphins so we went swimming  with them
and we got to touch them and it was awesome they came to mistletoe bay because there was killer wales at picton  so they came in it was the best day we also did a burmer trail i went first and i had to freak everyone out with a fake screm it was so funny.

the great year 6 camp

the great year 6 camp we did lots of stuff. we went biscuiting it was cool  we did the amazing race group 4 won it was cool we went on a long walk and i had no water on the walk and i got to see the glow worms they were amazing but at knight lots of people keep talking the end.

YEAR 6 CAMP BURMA TRAIL!

oh no its my turn i thought as i was blindfolded and led up to the forest i had never done a burma trail and i was freaked out to make it worse i heard what sounded like GUN SHOTS (it was just a adult chucking stones at iron) coming from the forest were going to do the burma trail. when we were walking up the "gun shots" started up and Mr Logan said '' oh no GUN" and ran off  so me and Nikayla were left hugging each other screaming but then he came back and we were led up  the stairs TO BE CONTINUED.

BURMA TRAIL

                                                                 BURMA TRAIL

it was a cold night on the thursday of i dont know and we done a burma trail it was dark and i heard screaming and then it was my turn i started then someone poked me i ripped a bush out of someones hand and then they grabbed my hoodie and pulled it over my head and i was warm then someone pulled me down and i kneed them in the guts real hard then i got up and and punched someone then i finished the end

THE BISCUIT AND SHARK

                                           THE  BISCUIT

for our year six camp we got to go biscuit it was so much fun until  i maid the mistake of going of saying go fast it was so much fun but it hurt when the water hit me on the face i felt liking saying stop. as we hit a bump we all hit the water like a rock i had some pain but it was all good at one stage he could not get me off so he maid the biscuit lean to my side and the two girls on with me knocked me off they fell off as well as we were towed to the jetie  i thought i saw a shark again i looked it was a dolpin

year 6 2012 camp

I just came back from being sick and now Im standing here on the edge of the wharf. finally it was my turn on the biscuit, I fell of 2 times and I got a turn on the back of the jet ski, it smelt horrible.

Stoke school year six camp 2012

Swimming with dolphins

On our camp this year we were lucky enough to swim with dolphins.
they came into mistletoe bay because apparently there were orchas (A.K.A killer whales)
Some people were out kayaking at that time and the dolphins swam right underneath them, THEY WERE SO LUCKY. Then our teacher had a suggestion to go swimming with them. I was so excited.
I jumped in as fast as I could. One swam right underneath them. Two of my friends were lucky enough to touch them. the jet ski was in the water so two kids got to go on with Andy and a another parent.

All about kittens and cats

SOME REALLY IMPORTANT QUESTIONS

If you think you are going to get a kitten/cat make sure you have all these things!

1 Do you have a back yard? cats need exercise so you need some place for them to go.

2 Do you live in a safe neighbourhood? Maybe you live by a busy road kittens and cats could be hit by passing cars.

3 Will your cat be a inside or outside cat? if the kitten is a outdoor you will need a cat flap if the kitten is inside it would need a litter box
4 Do you have enough money for your kitten? It cost lots of money to get a kitten you need a litter box toys cat flap if the cat is a outside cat maybe vaccinations

4 Do you have enough money? It costs a lot of money to buy a kitten toys, litter box, food, cat bowls, a bed.

5 Is there someone to take care of your kitten when you are away?

6 Do you have new furniture in your house? KITTENS HAVE VERY SHARP CLAWS they use them to scratch anything in the house

7 do you have other pets living in your house? make sure the get along with your kitten before the get in a fight

jewels disgusting and delicious food experience

“Great’ “the blindfold went over my head. does it have to be me, I said. OWW, to tight… Ahhh that’s better’. It was the 12 of September, which was definitely not your average Monday. I heard Travis in the back round, “Dog poop  Dog poop  he said repeating it over and over, I sighed… surprisingly I was well, calm. I heard a cap open. “Dog poop ” he said again. “BE QUIET TRAVIS!”
Oh no the taste testing had started. My eyes closed in fright. My doubly covered eyes stung like mad. “EEK” I screamed in my head. Something hard and bumpy plopped in my head. It was a freak out a silent panic then BAM I ate it… crunchy, hmm yum it was a new me, delicious “mm, mm, mm” I said… “Anchovies” said Mr. Logan I wish he would have never said that. Felt like spewing.

OK this time im gonna give payback. Firstly to get Travis, “its stringy cat poo really popular in Asia” he probably hates me now he knows what it really is. But im pretty sure he'd rather cat dun than dried squid. At least I liked it I thought Mr. Logan said that those are foods we haven’t tasted yet. Anyway whatever it was I wasn't ready for what was next.

Well im back with my other enemy (which isn't Anna) the blindfold
Well its round I decided to bite into it, that was definitely not the best idea “AHHH HOT, HOT AHHH  I said, I grabbed my drink bottle, I was ready to jump off a cliff onto ice tongue first, just to cool the spice down. “Wasabi peas” said Mr. Logan, “WASABI” my eyes were red with fury. Before I could have shouted the next round started.

“Wow” I said “That’s not Asian” I said that’s umm? … I really didn't know.
I took a bite out of it “YUM” I said in my head, it was harder than a stick but delicious it was filled of nuts. Mr. Logan said it a muesli  bar but it’s more of a treat to me.

“OK” I said we’re almost there, almost to the tastiest.  For that particular test we’re doing, the blindfold was my friend. I felt the object, “EW” it was all squishy. I tried it and it tasted horrible. I thought it was grapes but no it was dried banana. I thought dried banana was crunchy I guest it was a different type (evil music playing in the background)

I knew that if I ate that one the next would be the best. “HA” I said Nikitas got the blind fold I chanted in my head for a long time.
There were 3 packets and inside were 2 foot shaped crackers. I tried them, chicken. It was dusty but yum it’s the best one yet but inside I knew the next one would be best of all or so I thought…

The blind fold went over my head for the last time. It was a win win competition. I took the cap off the container. My lip failed to reach it but soon I did “OW” I had cut my lip. I ate it whole… lychee, rambutan it was one, “JELLY” I said I knew it lychee jelly.

“That’s it” no more, it’s over, “YES” all my feelings put together. No more anchovies, dried squid impishly hating wasabi peas spicy outraging taste of spice. I can't wait to go shopping for the crackers the sweet taste of chicken life of happiness it was all over or so I thought.

how to make a hovercraft

WHAT YOU NEED:

- A balloon
- A pop top lid from a drink bottle
- An old CD
- Glue

WHAT TO DO:

1. Take your pop top bottle lid and glue it right over the hole in your old CD.Leave it to dry.
2. Once your lid is securely glued to the CD, blow up your balloon.Pinch the bottom of the balloon so that the air can’t escape and stretch it over the pop top.
3.Place your hovercraft on a smooth surface like a table top and open the pop top lid so that the air from the balloon starts to escape.Let go and watch your hovercraft go!Give it a little push or flick with your finger and watch it glide across your surface.

The Extreme Science behind this:

Usually, if you had a CD sitting on a table top and gave it a push – it would only move as far as your finger pushes it.This is because of friction which is a force that acts between any surfaces that rub together – friction makes it harder for the objects to slide past each other.

In this experiment though, the balloon is letting out air, which escapes out under the CD creating a layer of air between the CD and the table top. This layer of air greatly reduces the amount of friction between the CD and the table top –meaning your CD hovercraft can glide around over the surface when you flick it with your finger!

Orange Slice

Orange Slice

WHAT YOU NEED:

- 1 cup plain flour
- 1/2 cup self raising flour
- ¾ cup caster sugar
- 125g reduced-fat spread
- 1 egg, separated
- ¾ cup light condensed milk
- 2 oranges, finely grated zest and juice
- 2 tbsp corn flour

WHAT TO DO:

1. Combine the flours and ½ cup sugar in a large bowl.
2. Melt the low fat spread on a low heat for a few minutes and set it aside to cool then add it to the flour mixture.
3. Now add the egg white.
4. Line your slice tin with baking paper.
Then you just have to press it into your tin and bake it for 15 minutes on 180 degrees.
5. Next you need to zest and juice the oranges.
6. Now it’s time to make the delicious orange topping. In a saucepan, combine the egg yolk, light condensed milk, orange zest and juice, corn flour and remaining sugar and whisk the mixture on a medium heat until it comes to the boil and thickens.
7. The final step is to pour the mixture over the top of your slice base

Record Cake

Record Cake

Record Cake

WHAT YOU NEED:

- 2 cups of icing sugar
- Knob of melted butter
- Boiling water
- Cocoa (makes it go darker)
- Red and black food colouring
- Sponge cake from the supermarket
- 3 Bowls

WHAT TO DO:

1. Sieve the icing into a bowl, add a small knob of melted butter and about a teaspoon of boiling water and mix well with a knife, keep adding more boiling water 1 teaspoon at a time until it becomes like a paste (Make sure you have an oldie helping with this step).
2. Now you need to make the red icing for the writing, so put a small amount into a separate bowl. Place a few drops of the red food colouring into your plain icing and stir. Repeat this step using the black food colouring - this will make your black icing.
3. You will also need white icing, this is super simple, just the icing sugar and boiling water!
Helpful tip, when spreading on your icing dip your butter knife into hot water, so it spreads like a dream…
4. Spread the black icing on to the sponge cake, leaving the centre bit for the white icing.
5. Now you can start decorate the top, take the licorice twists and tear them into strips, then wrap them around the top of your cake, lightly pressing them into the cake icing! This gives it the shiny vinyl like look!
6. Wrap a strip round the center of your cake, so the colouring doesn’t run into each other… then add the white icing to the center.
7. Then do the same again, to make the vinyl hole… add more black icing! Now you can start writing the name of your record with the red icing!

2. Add melted butter. Stir until well combined.
3. Press into lined baking tray using the back of a spoon.
4. Bake in a 180 degree oven for 10-12 mins.

Your next step is making the caramel.

1. Place butter and golden syrup in a pan, stirring occasionally.

i stood at the top of the tower, alone. looking down made my knees feel weak. i dicided it was now or never i had to jump on to the catapolt or the General would fling bolders at me at me and i would die, i had to atleast try and kill king Lucca. very slowly i walked of the edge, i shut my eyes and told myself i was in bed. when i opened them again i was on the catapolt but before i could do anything i was flung at the castle, my only companions were my best friend Dave and a cuple of bolders, i knew i would die if i touched solid gound again. i closed eyes and when i opened them again i was on solid ground and acually alive but it was the opposite to Dave, he got stuck on the edge of the castle and bleeding, really bleeding. i started cring and then i saw king Lucca, he was lying on the ground, i checked his pulse, he was dead. i pridicted he got hit by a bolder. i toke him out to show the General, i knew we had won and i krowned king luther.

were's my granny?

''Creeeek!'' i woke up with a start. what was that noise? ''Creeeek!'' this time it was louder, closer. was that heavy breathing? I decided to go to mum and dad's room for safety but when I got there, they were gone. i went to my little brothers to see if he knew were they were and once again he was gone. i walked back to my bed room but the door was locked, i checked my pockets for the key but it wasn't there so i went down to the kitchen and climbed out the window to my room but the window was shut. i saw the huge eyes of my cat, but then i remembered we didn't have a cat or a dog. i climbed back down the house and ran away to grandma's house.

Ice cream cupcakes recipe

25.09.2012
Hannah

  WHAT YOU NEED:

- 12 small icecream cones
- 1 ½ cups plain flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter at room temperature
- 1 cup sugar
- 3 eggs
- 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract
- ¾ cup milk

Icing:
- 50g softened butter (extra)
- 1 ¼ cups icing sugar
- 1 tb lemon juice

Decorations:
- Chocolate sauce
- Chopped peanuts
- Cherries
- Hundreds & thousands

WHAT TO DO:

1. First, make a stand for your cone cakes to bake in, so your ice cream cones won’t fall over in the oven.Take a deep oven dish (about 8cm deep is perfect) and cover it in a double layer of tinfoil, tucking the foil tightly around the edges of the dish. Then, using a skewer or chopstick, poke 12 holes in the tinfoil, evenly spaced apart. Then slowly poke the pointy bits of your ice cream holes through the holes – they should stand up straight with the tinfoil supporting them.
2. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt.
3. Cream butter and sugar until light & fluffy – use electric mixers if you have them.
4. Add in eggs one at a time to the butter mixture, then beat in vanilla.
5. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture in three batches, alternating with milk.
6. Fill each of your cones ¾ full with mixture.Bake at 180C for 5 – 10 minutes – they will bake really fast so keep an eye on them and check every 5 minutes!

To make icing & decorate:

1. To make icing, beat together your butter, sugar and lemon juice until it’s thick and well combined. You can add a drop of food colouring if you like.
2. To ice your cone cakes, use a piping bag, or if you don’t have one, you can use a re-sealable bag and snip a tiny corner off the bag to pipe your icing from.Starting at the edges of your cone cakes, pipe icing in a spiral towards the middle and finish with a pointy bit to look like a soft serve cone!
3. Then decorate your cone cakes to look like ice creams!Use hundreds and thousands, or make them look like ice cream sundaes with chocolate sauce, chopped peanuts and a cherry on top

How to make hokey pokey

25.09.2012
Hannah

      WHAT YOU NEED:

- 2 tablespoons of golden syrup
- 5 tablespoons of white sugar
- 1 teaspoon of baking soda

WHAT TO DO:

Now it’s important to be extremely careful with hokey pokey, because it’s super hot! So you’ll definitely need an oldie around to help you out. So to make Hokey Pokey, this is what you’ve gotta do:

1. Combine sugar and golden syrup in a pot and stir over a low heat until sugar is dissolved.
2. Turn up heat and bring to a boil. Remove from heat as soon as mixture boils.
3. Add baking soda. Mixture will froth up at this stage (The bicarbonate of soda breaks down with heat to release carbon dioxide gas. The gas causes the toffee mixture to froth and the gas becomes trapped in the sugar/syrup mixture)
4. Stir quickly to make sure it is all combined and then turn out on to a greased tray. (USE OVEN MITTS)

Slumbering ball of evil

I crept into the room as quiet as a mouse, trying not to disturb the slumbering ball of evil.  I raised the...  hammer high into the air to hit the slumbering ball of evil right on the head! BUT before I could, the slumbering of evil was awake no longer was the slumbering ball of evil was no longer slumbering it was awake. AHH!  I quickly looked around to find somewhere to hide. Just in time I found somewhere. Under the bed I hid. Thank you so much that the ball of evil did not find me.

Fishing For Salmon

Sunday 23 September 2012 my mum, sister, Uncle and me went to the Anatoki  Salmon Farm just out of Takaka. My sister and I went fishing and if you catch a salmon you have to keep it. But before we went fishing we looked in the ponds. The ponds were about the size of the Stoke School swimming pool. In pond 1 there were approximately  35,000 salmon, in pond 2 there were approximately  10,000 salmon and finally in pond 3 there were  8,000 salmon. When we went fishing I had a bigger rode then older my sister. I caught the first salmon within about the 4th or 5th cast. I called my salmon Fred, Fredo or Freddy. My sister took forever to catch a salmon. In the end my sister used the rode I used and after awhile she caught a salmon. My sister's and my salmon altogether weighed about  2.1kgs.

Damn Cheap Imported Cars

"Damn cheap imported cars," I thought as I walked up the path of the solitary house. My car had broken down and I was going to call for help. As I knocked on the old door...  it creaked open and an old lady appeared at the door and said "what do you want boy."  "My car has broken down and I was wandering if I could use your phone."   "Sure you can" said the old lady.  "Well big house you have here."  "Yah."  Said the old lady. So I called for help and they said they'll be there as soon as possible. The old lady made me a cup of tea and a biscuit and let me stay inside out of the cold, windy, wet weather. Here I am still in this old house hours and hours later.

Creeeek!

`Creeeek`! I woke up with a start. What was that noise? `Creeek`! This time it was louder, closer. Was that heavy breathing? I decided...  to have a look around downstairs.  So I did but I wish I hadn't it was dark pinch black!  Then `CREEEEK`!  Now it was louder and closer.  Then I heard footsteps getting closer, closer and closer. Then `CRASH`!  I so badly wanted to scream but I didn't I couldn't. I decided I would light a candle so i had some light when I was walking around trying to find were the noise was coming from. Then when I thought it was over I decided to go back to bed BUT it was NOT over!

Try something new pumpkin pie recipe have a go

24.09.2012
Hannah

WHAT YOU NEED:

  BASE:
- 50g Butter (melted)
- A packet of digestive biscuits

PIE MIX:
- 1 butternut pumpkin (roughly 500g)
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup milk or cream
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger
- Greek yoghurt to serve
- Snap lock bag

WHAT TO DO:

- Pumpkins aren’t easy to cut, so grab an oldie, and you’ll need a large serrated knife. Cut off the stem, and slowly cut it in half with a sawing motion.
- Then grab a spoon and scoop out all the seeds and stringy stuff.
- Chop up the remaining pumpkin into small chunks and then pop it in a microwave safe bowl.
- Chuck that in the microwave for about 15min or until soft.

While that’s underway, you can get on to making a pie crust/base.

- Put the digestive biscuits in a re-sealable bag and crush them with a rolling pin!
- Then chuck them in a bowl and add your 50g melted butter and combine!
- Then press the mixture in to your lined oven dish – you can use a glass to help you mould it nicely to the sides by pressing it to the sides of the dish.
- Grab your pumpkin out of the microwave – it will be soft now so you can peel it.
- Once your pumpkin is peeled and soft, it’s time to make a filling.

In a blender, combine:
- Soft pumpkin cubes
- 1 cup (250ml) milk
- 1/2 cup (110g) sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger until smooth
- Put your mixture in a bowl and add 2 eggs and stir.
- Pour that mixture into your base and pop in the oven at 190 degrees for about 45 mins!

Penguins

24.9.2012
Hannah

New Zealand is the penguin capital of the world. Of the 16 species of living penguins, nine breed in New Zealand or its territories, including the Ross Sea sector of Antarctica, and at least another four are visitors. New Zealand is home to the greatest diversity of penguins, and has more fossil species than any other region. The first and the oldest fossil penguins were found in New Zealand.
New Zealand has six species of penguin, and three more in the part of Antarctica New Zealand administers. Scientists have found bones of penguin ancestors dating back 55 million years. All penguins are protected by law, and five species are endangered.

Flightlessness
Penguins evolved from birds that could fly. Many other seabirds can fly as well as dive, but it is difficult to be good at both. The ancestors of today's penguins became better at diving and lost the ability to fly. This means that they can reach a bigger range of food from deep in the sea.
As the ancestors of penguins evolved into swimmers and divers, they developed special features:
  • shorter, powerful wings for flippers
  • large, heavy body for deep diving
  • insulating feathers to keep them warm
  • streamlined shape for fast swimming.
Smaller penguins dive 10–20 metres underwater, and the amazing emperor penguin can dive 100–200 metres looking for fish, krill or squid. But penguins can’t travel as far or as fast as many seabirds that can fly.

Life on land
Penguins can live for many weeks at sea, but some species come ashore every day or so. They also moult and breed on land. When they are nesting in the soil or among rocks, they can go without food for days or weeks.

Little blue penguin
Only 40 centimetres in length, these cute penguins come ashore at night. They nest all around the coast in burrows or caves, and lay two eggs each year.
Yellow-eyed penguin
This species has yellow eyes and a headband of yellow feathers, and breeds on subantarctic islands and in the South Island. Nesting in forests, these rare penguins are endangered by human activities such as farming and fishing.
The crested penguins
There are several species, which all have straggly yellow ‘eyebrows’. They lay two eggs, but only one hatches – no one is certain why. In Fiordland they nest in rainforest.
New Zealand’s antarctic penguins
Penguins breeding in Antarctica include the Adélie penguin and the largest of all, the emperor penguin. Emperors breed on sea ice in the middle of winter, and the males stay to incubate their egg on their feet, going without food for three months.

Northern hemisphere: a penguin-free zone
Penguins are found only in the southern hemisphere.  Firstly, flightlessness is only likely to evolve in places free of predators – especially mammalian ones – such as the isolated islands of New Zealand and the subantarctic. In contrast, being vulnerable to the bears, wolves and other predators of the northern hemisphere makes flight too valuable to give up. Secondly, tropical seas are generally too unproductive and the prey too dispersed, creating a barrier to penguins moving further north.

Modern-day threats
New Zealand and other southern islands and land masses with populations of penguins were not visited or settled by humans until the last few centuries. Once discovered, penguins were hunted for their meat, eggs, skin and oil. Although penguins are not directly preyed on by people any longer, things we introduced continue to threaten their survival: predators such as cats, dogs and mustelids; diseases; and habitat destruction.
Clearing the land for farming removes the vegetation yellow-eyed penguins need to shelter their nests. Indirect threats include pollution, overfishing and – perhaps most insidious – global warming. Periods of elevated sea-surface temperatures during the last 20 years have been associated with reductions in the yellow-eyed penguin’s principal prey species, and with toxic algal blooms that have decreased the survival and success of penguins breeding on the Otago Peninsula.

No Visitors Allowed
Codfish Island, to the west of Stewart Island, is the only place where you can find all three species of New Zealand’s mainland penguins – the yellow-eyed, little blue, and Fiordland crested penguins. But don’t think that it is the perfect place to observe penguins: the island is out of bounds to people for the recovery of the flightless native parrot, the kākāpō.

Dolphins

24.9.2012
Hannah

Different species Of There is some debate over how many different species of dolphins there really are. Some say there are 32 different species, while some say that there actually 33. It all depends on whether you think the White Whale counts as a dolphin or not. Some say that it does, some say that it doesn't.

Dolphin or Whale ?
The largest of all dolphin species is the Orca, which is commonly known as the Killer Whale. These dolphins can be over 31 feet long when fully grown, which has provided them with the unproper name of "whale".
Also, there are several different dolphins considered as the smallest dolphin species. These include True dolphins, Tucuxi dolphins, Hector's dolphins, Black dolphins, River dolphins, porpoises, and Commerson's dolphins.
Dolphins
  • Common Dolphin
  • Risso's Dolphins
  • Bottlenose Dolphin
  • White-Sided Dolphin
  • White Beaked Dolphin
  • Dusky Dolphin
  • Falkland Island Dolphin
  • Hour Glass Dolphin
  • Peale's Dolphin
  • Sarawak Dolphin
  • Heaviside's Dolphin
  • White Bellied Dolphins
  • Irrawaddy River Dolphins
  • Irrawaddy River Dolphins
Dolphin Facts
1.  Dolphins are mammals; they nurse their young from mammary glands.

2. Dolphins can swim up to 260 m. below the surface of the ocean, although they are mainly shallow divers.

·          Dolphins can stay up to 15 minutes under water, but they cannot breath under the water.
·          Dolphins use a technique called echolocation to find food and navigate.
·          Dolphins live in groups formed by 10 to 12 individuals.
·          There are 36 different kinds of ocean dolphins and 5 species of river dolphins.
·          The largest dolphin is the “killer whale” (also known as Orca).
·          The most known dolphin is the “ bottlenose dolphin”.
·          Dolphins are warm-blooded.
·          Dolphins communicate through sounds and whistles.
·          Dolphins eat fish and squid.
·          Dolphins are mammals NOT fish.

Hectors Dolphin
The brain of a 38-kilogram Hector’s dolphin weighs 640 grams. This is 1.7% of its total body weight – one of the highest proportions in the animal kingdom. It is bettered only by the typical proportion for humans of 1.9 %. But to what extent a big brain means high intelligence is not well established

Hector's dolphins do not live as long as others: the smaller the species, the shorter the lifespan.

Fishing is the most significant known threat to Māui’s and Hector’s dolphins.  Department of Conservation created marine sanctuaries throughout NZ where nets cannot be used in certain areas and at certain times of the year to protect Hector's dolphins.

Finding food and navigating under water by vision alone is tricky in murky water. Dolphins can use echolocation as well. They send out a stream of clicks and ‘read’ the echo that bounces back from hard surfaces, such as a rock wall or the taut swim bladder of a fish. This gives them information about size, density and distance.

Māori and dolphins
Many cultures have revered dolphins. The Greeks put people to death for killing them, and Māori often described them as taniwha, or water spirits.
The Ngāti Wai people, who used to live on the Poor Knights, Great Barrier and Little Barrier, believed that dolphins acted as messengers in times of need, bearing news from the islands to the mainland. The tribes living around Cook Strait talked of Paneiraira, a taniwha that resembled a whale. It would help canoes cross the tricky strait between the North and South islands.
The taniwha Tuhirangi guided Kupe, the mythical Polynesian explorer, to New Zealand. Later, Kupe placed Tuhirangi at French Pass in the Marlborough Sounds, to guide canoes through the treacherous waters. Tuhirangi lives there in a cave called Kaikaiawaro.
Friendly dolphins
In modern times, friendly dolphins – Pelorus Jack and Opo are the best known – have regularly made appearances around New Zealand’s coast.

Pelorus Jack, the speedy Risso
In 1888 a 4-metre Risso’s dolphin escorted a steamer from the outer Marlborough Sounds towards Nelson. He became known as Pelorus Jack, and Māori naturally recognised him as the taniwha Tuhirangi. From then on until his disappearance in 1912, he accompanied ships for a distance of about eight kilometres to and from French Pass, the dangerous passage separating D’Urville Island from the mainland. If the dolphin had to choose between two boats he would pick the faster, and could easily outpace a vessel travelling at 30 kilometres per hour. At night his speeding outline would glow with phosphorescence from plankton in the water. He became so famous that his picture featured on the cover of the Illustrated London News. It was never established whether ‘Jack’ was male or female.
